The Meme Vessel Series began as an attempt to bring contemporary images and language into the traditional medium of ceramics. Memes, which are rapidly created and circulated through the internet and social media, can communicate specific emotions and situations through only a short phrase or a single image. I became interested in their immediacy, familiarity, and humor, and sought to place these everyday visual references onto ceramic surfaces to create a new context.

The works incorporate cat memes, popular expressions, and figures and phrases drawn from contemporary culture. These images were primarily painted directly onto jars and vessels using iron-painting techniques. The lines created by the brush vary according to speed, pressure, and movement, contrasting with the smooth and reproducible nature of digital images. Through the actions of the hand, glazing, and firing, images taken from screens are transformed into physical and irreversible traces. Even when the same image is repeated, the curvature of the vessel, the movement of the glaze, and the firing conditions give each work a different expression.

Through this series, I explored how traditional ceramic techniques can engage with contemporary visual culture rather than remain limited to historical subjects. By combining the immediacy of digital imagery with the materiality and permanence of ceramics, I sought to create a dialogue between rapidly changing online culture and the slow, physical process of making and firing clay.
